  5.     Independence! Self-determination! Freedom! As the Soviet
  6. Union's many ethnic and religious groups take up these rallying
  7. cries with increasing conviction, it is easy to forget the dark
  8. side of nationalism. The first reaction to the disintegration
  9. of the menacing Soviet monolith may be euphoria, but all too
  10. often, as demonstrated by other countries where ethnic rivalries
  11. have shattered national integrity, bloodshed soon follows. In
  12. Yugoslavia fierce fighting has killed more than 300 people since
  13. Croatia declared independence on June 25. In Sri Lanka an
  14. eight-year war between Tamil guerrillas and the Sinhalese
  15. majority has left 18,000 dead and countless numbers homeless and
  16. destitute. Tamil Tigers have also been held responsible for the
  17. assassination last May of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv
  18. Gandhi, who sent in troops in July 1987 to bolster the ruling
  19. Sinhalese. Does this kind of deep-seated hatred and violence
  20. await minority Russians in Ukraine, or Ossetians in Georgia or
  21. ethnic Ukrainians in Moldavia? Sri Lanka and Yugoslavia offer
  22. a not-too-distant mirror of the mayhem that could be unleashed.
